The Nico Tobias Band channels the stories and landscapes of Alberta into lively and danceable rock music that all audiences can enjoy. Based out of Edmonton, the band is a fixture at bars and festivals across the prairies and has made appearances at the Canmore Folk Music Festival, City of Canmore New Years celebrations, Waynestock, and Prince Albert’s Chesterfest, among many others.
Across nearly a decade of writing, performing, and recording together, the band has captured a sound equally influenced by the dad-rock heroes we grew up with (The Eagles, The Guess Who, Steppenwolf), and by the Canadiana greats who define our genre (Corb Lund, Mike Plume, Gordon Lightfoot). With such varied influences, our only guarantee is that any crowd will be on their feet dancing, and celebrating the province we call our home.
Headed by songwriter and singer Nico Tobias, the band consists of James O’Neill on the brushes and toms, Ty Coutu on the fast guitar, and Jordan Ast on the groovy guitar. The band came together while studying music at Macewan University where days on end studying jazz music made playing rock and country - a welcome reprieve.
In 2018, Nico’s song “Anthracite” won the Canadian Songwriting Competition (judged by Sam Roberts and Joel Plaskett among others) for the Canadiana genre, and this was quickly followed by the band’s debut full-length “No More Mr. Nico Guy'' which was well received in spite of it’s title. 2020’s EP “Berta Badland Buffalo Boy Band” was given a 4-star review by the Edmonton Journal, and Exclaim! Magazine included The Nico Tobias Band in their “Class of 2020”. Since then, the band has continued to release new music, including the EP “Manhunt!” which has been on the radio since December 2024.
