In July 2024, Jasper, experienced a historic wildfire, the largest in the past century, affecting over 32,000 hectares and causing significant damage to homes and businesses.

Despite the adversity, the town's spirit remained strong, and recovery efforts have been swift and collaborative. While some areas were affected, much of the park's breathtaking landscapes remain untouched, and the resilience of our community shines as we rebuild and welcome visitors back to our beloved destination.

Jasper continues to be a place of awe-inspiring wilderness, and we invite travelers to experience the beauty, adventure, and warmth that define our town as we move forward together.

Travel with Purpose: Responsible Tourism is vital and welcomed here!

As we welcome visitors back to Jasper, we invite you to be a part of our journey towards recovery. We encourage all visitors to practice responsible tourism, and we kindly ask for your cooperation in ensuring a respectful and positive experience for everyone. Here’s how you can make a positive impact and enjoy our beautiful mountain town responsibly:

  • You are welcome, but please be mindful. Our residents are navigating a lot of challenges right now - please be considerate of local residents and businesses and their recovery efforts.
  • Respect all area closures during your visit. Some closures are in place for safety reasons, while others help ensure privacy for those involved in recovery efforts.
  • Capture the beauty, not the damage: We encourage you to take photos of the park’s stunning landscape that still exists – please skip photos of structures hit by the wildfire out of respect for our residents.
  • Rebuilding with you in mind: Our community is hard at work rebuilding, and we are committed to providing you with a memorable experience. Please be aware that things will look different for a while, so we appreciate your patience and understanding.
  • Support local: One of the best ways to help our community is to spend within Jasper National Park. Whenever you can, eat in our restaurants, stay in our hotels, shop in our local stores, use our services, explore with our guides, rediscover Jasper.
  • Recreational drone use is not permitted within National Park boundaries. Please leave your drone at home: using recreational drones in national parks is dangerous and illegal, carrying a maximum fine of $25,000

Jasper, reopened to visitors in September 2024 following recovery efforts from the summer wildfire. While some areas are still being restored, many businesses, accommodations, and park attractions are open and welcoming guests.

Yes, Jasper is still very much worth visiting after the fire. While some areas were affected, much of Jasper National Park’s stunning landscapes remain untouched, and the town has worked hard to restore services, trails, and attractions. Visitors can still enjoy breathtaking mountain scenery, wildlife viewing, outdoor adventures, and the warm hospitality that makes Jasper special.

What areas are open?

Though many popular areas within the Jasper National Park were affected by the fire, Jasper is Canada's largest National Park and much of it was untouched. Parks Canada has created an interactive map where what areas of the park are open here.

What businesses are open?

Though many businesses were affected by the wildfire, much of the town of Jasper has now re-opened for business. A full list of all the businesses that have reopened can be found here.
